What should be the house of colonist on Mars?
About Mars shot a lot of films, and in some of them we can see various examples of possible habitable structures for the colonists. The latest example - a film "Martian." Build on Mars anything - not an easy task. There is almost no oxygen, no liquid water (at least until it was discovered), very cold, plus the high background radiation.
However, the plans NASA - send a mission to Mars by 2030. The expedition must return to Earth, it is not a project with the colonists sent to one end. However, if future marsonavty want to return to Earth, they need to protect themselves from the effects of the environment. Create robust housing project for marsonavtov - not an easy task. Perhaps that is why the space agency has decided, together with America Makes hold a competition whose purpose - getting the original design of the housing.
The competition is open to architects, engineers, and scientists. The first stage of the competition has already passed, and the jury chose 30 of the most promising projects. The most interesting is that all projects must meet one point - the project must use a 3D printer to create some (or all) of the elements of property. Living area should be about 93 square meters and include a life-support systems, plumbing components, a place for cooking and sleeping space. View the jury selected projects here .
In the meantime, let's look at 5 of these projects 30.
The Martian Vault
Author: Tomasz Dzieduszynski
This is probably the most rational form design object - closed vault, the structure, which was used by the builders of antiquity. Such objects can withstand the effects of time, remaining intact for hundreds of years (assuming the use of appropriate materials, of course).
Here the author suggested the use of 3D-printing robots, which are processed into cement soil of Mars.
Staye A While
Author: Team Staye
This structure is proposed to place under the ground, under the замерзшим sea near the equator of Mars. A large amount of water, albeit in the form of ice - a guarantee that marsonavtov is everything necessary for life.
However, to drill the ice, plus build a similar structure - the problem is clearly more difficult than to create something like the object of the above.
LavaHive
Author: Team LavaHive
Even more realistic project than suggested above. Inflatable system, where there is everything necessary for life. Some elements are created using 3D printers. If necessary, this can be blow away, to collect and transport to another location.
Marsapia
Author: Mars Terrain Intelligence Collaborative
Martian soil can give a person a silicon and iron. The project team proposes to use these elements to create a convex home with strong walls that will protect marsonavtov against solar radiation, small meteorites and other things.
Donut House Mk. I
Author: A.R.C.H.
Rational structure in the form of a donut - is another project. At the same time it proposed to build a wall of basalt, with intensification of the fiber material. "Donut" is divided into sectors, and if one part of the house is damaged, the sector can be blocked by going to another segment of the secure building.
