The driest place on Earth - the Atacama Desert in Chile

In some parts of the Atacama Desert there was no rain for several hundred years. Those who happened to be there, tell us that the landscape looks more like Mars than Earth. Lips in the wilderness constantly crack and peel off the skin from lack of moisture. However, in other parts of the Atacama moisture is sufficient, that there can grow large quantities of shrubs and cacti.

On the horizon you can see the snow-capped peaks of the Andes and volcanoes, many of which are active and can be seen coming out of the crater smoke. A by-product of volcanic activity is a salt, scattered throughout the desert.
