Hotel Beira Grande Hotel in Mozambique, built in 1954, was once the pride of Africa and has been paying serious business and leisure travelers. There were 120 exclusive guest rooms, a cinema, several restaurants, a helipad and swimming pool of Olympic standards. But in 1963, the hotel was closed, never coming to self-sufficiency.
Between 1977 and 1992, the building served as a military base during the Civil War. Now the hotel is populated with about 3,500 squatters.
