Alex Petroovich Maresiev (7 May 1916 - 18 May 2001) - pilot, Hero of the Soviet Union. Because of severe injuries during the Great Patriotic War he was amputated both legs. However, despite the disability, the pilot returned to the sky and flew with artificial limbs. Altogether during the war has made 86 sorties, shot down 11 enemy planes: four to seven and wounded - after being wounded.
