The name "Namibia" in the language of the people nama means "place where there is nothing." The Namib Desert is extremely dry (only 10-13 mm of rain per year) and, except for a few coastal towns, virtually uninhabited. The Namib is the oldest desert in the world: the desert or semi-desert conditions exist here continuously for the past 80 million years, that is, the desert was formed during the time of the dinosaurs.
