US Republicans issued a bill on maintaining control over the domain name system
Today, three members of the Republican Party of the United States представили Bill , which prohibit NTIA (National Telecommunications and Information Management USA) transmit power to anyone on the Domain Name System. The bill may be considered and adopted during the year.
According to the authors of the bill - Todd Rokita, John Shimkus and Marsha Blackburn - any reforms in the management of DNS should be banned as long as they do not adopt the Comptroller General of the United States. (Comptroller General oversees the specialized control structures, one of which is NTIA).
"We have no right to prevent the capture of the Internet as Russia seizes land in Ukraine. America should not give up power so-called "stakeholders" who will manage the foreign governments. We demand that the government report to Congress before introducing any reforms to the Internet, "- said Marsha Blackburn.
"In March of this year, we have seen that Russia blocked sites opposition, Turkey banned Twitter, China has introduced new restrictions on the viewing of online video, and the ruling clan in Malaysia at every opportunity ready to censor the net. It is not a question of theory. There are real authoritarian governments that will in any way interfere with the free flow of information. What we gain from the fact that Vladimir Putin will give the whole world another territory to advance its plans to restrict freedom? "- Says Shimkus.
This initiative is a response to the Republicans on the US Government to surrender its authority to manage DNS.
But, apparently, the Republicans either did not understand what was going on, or are engaged in blatant provocation. Foreign experts do not hesitate to call this project pointless and stupid.
As we wrote in the article the statement of the US government, the question of the full transfer of the Domain Name System is still not worth it. The US government reserves the final word with him. If ICANN does not develop a "model DNS management with the participation of all stakeholders," which will satisfy him, no reform will not happen. ICANN also notes that the US government would not accept any reform option, in which the management of the DNS move to other governments or international political organizations.
Even if the bill is signed, it will have no impact on any changes in the structure of Internet governance.
