Volcanic Vineyards Lanzarote (17 photos)
Lanzarote (Lanzarote) refers to the Canary Islands (Spain). It is also called the "island of fire-spitting mountains" - on a small island in length and a width of about 60 to 15 kilometers is located about three hundred volcanoes. In the autumn of 1730 at a time of thirty craters began to escape the lava and ashes. The eruption lasted for six years, and as a result a third of the island was covered with basalt and lifeless ashes. This fact is very negative impact on agriculture of Lanzarote, but did not stop the local winegrowers who, in the end, successfully adapted to grow grapes right in the volcanic desert.
main part of the vineyards of Lanzarote is situated in the valley of La Geria, which is significant length covered with a thick layer of ash. Grape seedlings are planted in a specially dug pit or trench up to several meters wide. This is done firstly to ensure that the roots easier access to fertile soil, and secondly to ensure grapes moisture. Rains are almost no artificial irrigation, too, is not practiced, the plants are fueled by dew, which condenses on the walls of "funnels". Saturated ash soil layer, in turn, tends to keep a long moisture.
