January 2, 1929, Canada and the United States reached an agreement to halt further erosion. In 1950 the two countries signed the "Agreement Niagara Water» (Niagara River Water Diversion Treaty), is expected to further efforts to drain the water. In addition to the allotment of the water for power plants, erosion control efforts have included underwater dam to redirect the most damaging currents, as well as the strengthening of the slopes at the top of the waterfall. The most significant work was done in 1969. In June this year, the Niagara River has been completely started up a different course, and the "American Falls" for a few months remained dry. It is possible to create a temporary stone and earth dam slope (clearly visible in the photo on the right) 5. While the waterfall "Horseshoe" received an additional amount of water, the US Army Corps of Engineers studied the riverbed and correcting mechanical defects, which otherwise would only lead to further acceleration of erosion and retreat of the falls.
