Wonders of the Ancient World (10 pics + 1 video)
Initially, there were seven wonders of the world, but many are lost in time and in ruins, many have disappeared without a trace.
Fortunately, many managed to recover, so we can imagine how they looked.
By 7 major wonders of the world would like to add three more: one in Rome, one which has been excluded from the list, and one of Ethiopia (which still exists).
The Great Pyramids of Giza
2584-2561 years. BC. - Today
This is only one of the Wonders of the Ancient World that still stands today. However, if you come to Egypt to marvel at this miracle of ancient architecture, you do not have the luck to see it in the form in which it was conceived.
All pyramids were constructed from special stone blocks, and the top covered with their polished slabs of limestone. These pyramids were to shine in the rays of the hot African sun. Unfortunately, in 1300 the earthquake polished tiles crumbled, and she was taken and used for the construction of mosques.
Ishtar Gate
575 BC - Today
As part of the walls of Babylon, Ishtar Gate (the eight gate of Babylon) is one of the wonders of the world. Part of this building is preserved and part of it was reconstructed. In 1930 in Berlin, it has been recreated copy of the original gate on the basis of the surviving part.
These gates can be seen in the Berlin Museum. Gates amaze with its beauty, so if they will be recovered to the point where were originally erected, they will undoubtedly become a modern wonder of the world.
Temple of Artemis at Ephesus
550 BC - 262 AD
Pictured in the photo the Temple of Artemis - a miniature model of the original building, which can be seen in the open-air museum "Miniaturk". This magnificent ancient temple dedicated to Zeus' daughter Artemis.
The temple was rebuilt in its history, three times, but eventually was completely destroyed by the barbarians who did not spare even the wonders of the world. Unfortunately, all that remains of it today - one column, standing alone in the ruins.
Statue of Olympian Zeus
435 BC - 5-6 century AD
This giant statue of Zeus in the temple complex was dedicated to Zeus - the main god of the ancient Greeks. The statue was so great that took out almost to the ceiling of the temple. It was completely made of ivory and covered with gilded bronze sheets, so you can only imagine how much it cost.
At the present time it is not known how the statue was destroyed and why it disappeared, but most likely, it has suffered because of the fire and was destroyed along with the temple.
Mausoleum of Halicarnassus
351 BC - 1494 AD
Mausoleum of Halicarnassus - one of the wonders of the ancient world, a replica of which stands today in Washington, and a miniature copy can be seen in the same Istanbul museum "Miniaturk". The original was built for the Carian ruler Mausolus in the city of Halicarnassus, the ruins of which today is a well-known resort town of Bodrum in Turkey.
The mausoleum has not sustained numerous earthquakes and collapsed after 19 centuries! Knights loannites dismantled stones from the ruins of a building to enhance the nearby fortress.
Colossus of Rhodes
292/280 BC - 226 BC
You may wonder why we put a photo of the statue of Liberty in New York to illustrate this point. This was due to the fact that the statue was designed and constructed on the basis of the scope and design of the original statue of the Colossus of Rhodes. At least, about the Colossus were the creators of the Statue of Liberty.
Thanks to this modern monument we can imagine how really looked Colossus - one of the wonders of the ancient world. Unfortunately, the monument stood a short time, an earthquake 226 BC threw him to the ground, where he lay for about 800 years! Eventually, the remains of the statues were sold to Arab conquerors Jewish merchant, who resold it as scrap.
Lighthouse of Alexandria
1303-1480 years. BC
Reflected in the photograph the building is a copy of the Alexandria lighthouse in full size, which today is in China. The original was on the island of Pharos, and was constructed in the 14th century to light the way for sailors to guide their ships to Alexandria.
Like many other outstanding buildings from this list, the lighthouse was destroyed by earthquakes and, ultimately, in its place built a medieval fortress.
Aksum obelisk
4th century BC. e. - Today
Aksum obelisk could be called a wonder of the world, however, this monument has never been included in the list of great works as Ethiopia, the country in which it was built, was quite far from the rest of the Wonders, so look at it but the locals a little who succeeded. The obelisk was built as an indicative sign indicating the place of burial.
In 1937, Italian fascists, who seized Ethiopia dismantled the obelisk and took him to Rome, but only at the beginning of the 21st century obelisk was returned to Ethiopia by the Italians.
Colosseum
70-80 BC - Today
In this photo you can see the Colosseum as it was originally. Unfortunately, the building was badly damaged in 1349 during a strong earthquake. It was built by the Romans for gladiatorial performances, but after their ban on the building was used for various purposes, for some time there is even a dump, and the stones of the Colosseum taken away for the construction of other buildings.
Ultimately, however, the Colosseum, or rather all that is left of it, has been turned into a tourist attraction that is visited by millions of tourists.

Bani in these places were built originally by the British king Bladudom.
The city was famous for its thermal springs, which were used for the treatment of various diseases. The Romans, who conquered these areas, have contributed to the architecture of the building.
