Nobel laureate in physics plans to donate money from the prize to help Ukraine
The Nobel Prize in Physics is the most prestigious award in the world. And one of its winners, German scientist Ferenc Krausch, already knows what he will spend the money from the prize. He decided to donate part of his physics award to a charity he founded last year to help Ukrainians.
Instagram And today's edition "Site" He will tell you about this scientist and his decision.
Nobel Prize in Physics Ferenc Krausch is a Hungarian-Austrian physicist, doctor of technical sciences in laser physics. Director of the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics in Germany. Head of the Department of Experimental Physics at Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich. His team was the first in the world to create and measure a light pulse lasting less than one femtosecond. In 2023, Ferenc Krausch, together with two other physicists – Pierre Agostini and Anne L’Yuillier – received the Nobel Prize in Physics. Topic: Creation of methods for studying the dynamics of electrons in a liquid. The amount of monetary remuneration amounted to 11 million SEK, which is approximately 990 thousand dollars.
In addition to scientific work, Ferenc Krausch is the founder of the charity Science 4 People. This organization was established a year and a half ago. The purpose of the organization is to support people who suffered from the war in Ukraine. Science 4 People works with non-profit organizations. Their activities are aimed at providing students of the western regions of Ukraine with an opportunity to study. Another main guiding activity of the charity is to help Ukrainian school graduates and students.
Today, the charity Science 4 People is involved in several projects. One of them is the repair of a school in the village of Bakosh, Transcarpathian region. It is now used as a temporary residence for more than 100 internally displaced persons. Science 4 People provides the school and its students with the necessary equipment. So that training can be conducted online. Another project is to help the children of two villages in Transcarpathia. They lacked knowledge because of war and pandemics.
Within the framework of this project, free classes in chemistry, biology, mathematics, geography, history, Ukrainian and English, as well as Hungarian are held once a week. These lessons are aimed at a more in-depth knowledge of these subjects, which is provided by professional teachers. Both students and schoolchildren and teachers can attend classes. It is planned that by February 2024, another school will take part in the project and the number of students will significantly expand. And the Nobel Prize in Physics, donated by Krausch, will be the basis for the continuation of this project.
The main patrons of the charity organization Science 4 People were other Nobel Prize winners of different years. They are the 2018 Nobel Laureate in Physics Gerard Mourou, the 2014 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry Stefan Gell and the 2007 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry Gerhard Ertl. Our editorial office "Site" I hope that there will be more and more such projects in Ukraine, and our children will be able to receive relevant knowledge in comfortable conditions throughout the country.
