Development of reading speed at home
In 1998, he held a seminar “Project RX” at Princeton University. This workshop focused on high reading speed. A three-hour experiment was conducted to help participants increase their reading speed by 386%. This experiment was conducted on people who could read five languages, and even people with dyslexia learned to read 3,000 words of technical text per minute.
You can also improve your score and read mountains of books in a short period of time. For example, if you read at 200 words per minute, you can increase that speed to 700.
The main thing is to understand the principles by which our vision works, and then you will be able to more effectively manage your time. Today, the editors will tell you how to quickly read and perceive the text you read, without losing sight of the main information. For the experiment you will need a timer, pen or pencil and a book of 200 pages.
Exercises to improve reading speed
Reading books quickly is a very useful skill, especially when you need to squeeze into tight deadlines. You can’t take away a person’s desire to enjoy art books and stretch their reading for weeks. But not everyone has that time, right?

Exercises to improve reading speed
- Check your initial reading speed: count the number of words you read per minute. Write your result in a notebook.
- Pick up a pencil and slowly lead the tip of a pencil through the text. Read words without stopping, keeping up with the movement of the pencil. Try to read each line as quickly as possible. Don’t stop at the word to understand the meaning of the text, it’s an exercise in speed. It can improve the result by 2 times.
- Turn on the stopwatch and try to read a line of text in 1 second, then even faster, ahead of the tip of the pencil. The most difficult thing is not to slow down the movement of the pencil to have time to read the words. Don’t try to understand the words, just read them as quickly as possible.
- Concentrate your gaze on the middle of a page of text or on a monitor. Thanks to peripheral vision, we will still see what is written in the margins, but at the same time save 50% of the time on reading. Experienced readers read the text fluently, concentrating on the basic words to understand the essence of the book.
- After you stop slowing down the pencil and you can read the text without getting stuck in words, keep setting the pace with the pencil. But now start reading the text with the second word at the beginning of the line, then with the third. Perceptual reflexes are trained at this stage, and if you don’t understand anything you read, it’s okay.
- After completing all the exercises, set a timer for 1 minute and check the reading speed again. Surprisingly, after one day of class, the reading speed doubles. Do not stop training and you will achieve great results.
