Created batteries on seawater, can replace lithium

Most technical innovations in the development of batteries have one thing in common – they are cheaper and safer than traditional lithium-ion batteries.

We cannot deny the fact that today the market prevails it is this class of batteries. However, their current advantages are compactness and the ability to store significant amounts of energy per unit volume is more than offset by the disadvantages:

  • Lithium is a rare earth element, which inevitably causes a rise in the price of the device;
  • Li-ion battery can be easily ignited;
  • Batteries based on them have a short life.
Engineers of the National Institute of Ulsan (UNIST, S. Korea) battery that is designed, functioning on the basis of the solution of sodium oxide in water (the major components of sea water). According to the optimistic prognoses of scientists, soon she will be able to compete with traditional batteries in terms of performance.

Sodium, unlike lithium is the sixth most spoken language on Earth, which naturally makes the new development is much cheaper, and its use in the solution eliminates the risk of fire.

Renewable energy sources are becoming more popular, but the greatest effect, often, you can get by using them in conjunction with batteries. It is expected that in the future, seawater will be able to play a key role in the conservation of energy, and do it on a larger scale.

The principle of operation of a new battery, the scientists described in the journal of the American Chemical Society.

New battery salt water not just acts as the electrolyte, a kind of "catholyte" – the Union of the electrolyte and the cathode. A constant flow of new sea water is "smooth" source of sodium ions required for charge transfer. While charging occurs, the extraction of sodium ions from sea water and storing them within the cathode space. In the process of battery discharge, the sodium is released from the material of the anode and reacts with water and oxygen (occurs during electrolysis) with the formation of sodium hydroxide. Through these processes, it is possible to create cycles in the work and storage of energy.

After testing the technology, the researchers plan to assemble battery packs based on compact batteries. And to create a commercial version of the battery able to provide energy for a family of four, they are going by the end of 2017. published

P. S. And remember, only by changing their consumption — together we change the world! ©
