The defence firm has created a new method of processing waste into electricity

The largest and most well-known defence company, US firm Lockheed Martin, which until then dealt exclusively with the creation of military and space systems, has now decided to become a global player in the energy market.

Last month on the large landfill near new York, she completed the construction plant Owego (which has invested $10.3 million) for the processing of waste into bioenergy. It is planned that the enterprise of the order of 3560 tonnes of waste per year will be converted into electricity.

The idea of transforming biological waste into energy is not new, but still burning is the most popular method of obtaining energy from waste. The problem is that this method creates a serious problem of harmful emissions into the air, and Lockheed Martin tried from this technology to go.

In cooperation with the German-Indian company "Concord Blue", the company's engineers have developed a completely different mechanism of processing waste into clean energy. This method as it creates a special kind of heat treatment which occurs in anoxic conditions. In the air, not fly ash, fumes and debris, and therefore, as such, no harmful side products.

Initially, the Owego plant will be supplied the products of woodworking industry, but if the plant shows good results in its "furnace" will go a broad range of waste — household, construction and industrial waste.

According to the company that invented clean method of recycling is public and easily implemented not only on waste treatment plants, but also on the basis of other enterprises, such as schools, hospitals, landfills, factories, grocery shops, parks or community organizations.

This technology turns waste into electricity via a closed-circuit system which does not require additional power. It includes four main stages:

  • The collection of waste.

  • Their separation on a metal, glass, household, wood and industrial waste. Household and wood waste should be dried to a state in which them is no more than 20% moisture.

  • The aggregation gas. Dried waste is moved to storage tank from where is pumped out oxygen. Then they are heated to high temperatures with a special thermopropionicum – heated to a high temperature ceramic beads. These balls are evenly distributed over the debris temperatures in excess of 400 on (this process is called thermolysis), fire does not arise, since the fire requires oxygen. And no burning does not cause air emissions of such harmful substances as dioxin.

Using this two-step process and soft and hard waste is converted into gas, after which it is placed in a special chamber, where it is purified and converted into biofuel, consisting mainly of hydrogen, carbon monoxide and small amounts of carbon dioxide.

  • The production of electricity. The resulting gas is then used as fuel for an internal combustion engine that generates electricity. Gas can also be used to produce hydrogen and biofuels for cars.

Once the Owego plant will run at full capacity, Lockheed Martin and Concord Blue plan to build an identical plant in Herten (Herten, Germany). The planned facility will process up to 50,000 tonnes of wood waste per year, producing 5 megawatts of electricity. This amount will be enough to provide electricity to about 5,000 homes and businesses.

"This new technology of bio-energy can completely change the situation of waste on the planet," said Frank Armijo, Vice President of Lockheed Martin Energy. published
