The Solvey hut at the top of the Matterhorn

The Solvey hut located on the North-Eastern slope of the ridge of the Matterhorn in Switzerland at the height of 4003 meters. It is the highest mountain hut in the submission of the Swiss Alpine club. Mountain huts are designed to in a difficult situation to provide climbers and travellers shelter and food.









The Solvey hut can be used only in extreme cases, if you have any special need. Covering nearly two thirds of the Matterhorn, at 743 meters above the previous Hörnli hut and reaching 475 meters to the top, climbers can take refuge in the cabin from the sudden deterioration in weather conditions, or the occurrence of other difficult situations. The hut is located on the edge of a precipice, overlooking the magnificent view of the mountain ranges and snow-covered landscapes.





Built this shelter in August 1915. All construction materials were delivered using animals to a height of 3260 meters, where with the help of a temporary cable car was peredelyvalis directly to the construction site at a height of 4000 meters. The house is set for 5 days, then in 1966, strengthened and restored, and in 1976 installed a telephone for emergency calls.

Called the cabin in honor of the Belgian Solvay Ernest (1838-1922), who sponsored the construction of the previous Hörnli hut on the Matterhorn as a gratitude for the unforgettable hours that he spent in the mountains. Then he realized that the sudden storms which can lead to very serious tragedies. Solvey was an inventor and businessman, invented a way to produce on an industrial scale sodium carbonate, and after retirement moved to climbers.
