Geologists unravel the mystery of the "moving rocks" in death Valley
Geologists American space Agency (NASA) has announced that it has solved one of the biggest mysteries of nature — the phenomenon of "moving stones", which are located in the Valley of Death (USA) at the bottom of the dry lake Racetrack Playa.
The question of how large boulders, some weighing more than 300 pounds, unable to move by themselves, alarmed the minds of scientists for nearly a century, giving rise to many supernatural theories and myths, but still was a mystery.
It is surprising that the fact that the stones move so far nobody has been able to see. However, the fact that the blocks are really moving, eloquent traces of which remain on the sandy bottom of the lake.
Professor Ralph Lorenz of Johns Hopkins University in 2006 he conducted research for NASA in Death Valley. He argues that the secret of the "moving stones" is that in winter they are covered with ice, and during the thaw — the slide surface due to the wind, writes The Daily Mail.
His theory scientist confirmed on the basis of a simple experiment, which was conducted at his home. He had to freeze in the water of a small pebble to some part of it remained above water. Then he turned it over and put it in the pool with a small amount of water and sand on the bottom, so he created the conditions that occur on the bottom of the lake during the thaw. The ice allowed the stone quite easily float on the surface of the pool in a makeshift "dirt". Thus, in order that the stone started to move, it was only a small gust of air.
