Spitbank Fort – a hotel based in Southsey, UK
Hotels in the most unexpected places have long been something unique
Customers increasingly want to feel connected to history by spending the night in a place with a long history. It was for such tourists that the unusual Spitbank Fort hotel was created, which is located in the building of the old fort. The most interesting thing is that this fort is surrounded by the sea on all sides.
In the middle of the water surface, 1.6 km from the coast of British Portsmouth, there is an unusual Spitbank Fort hotel. This building of the second half of the XIX century served as a fort that protected the port from attacks by the French Navy. - See more at: During the Second World War, the building was badly damaged and ceased to perform its functions.
In the 1990s, the fort, which no longer belonged to the British Ministry of Defence, was renovated. At first, a nightclub opened here, then Spitbank Fort became the location for filming television shows. In 2010, the fort underwent a global renovation and turned into a luxury hotel. See more at: The latest rework cost £3m.
At one time in the premises of the fort about 150 soldiers slept in hammocks. Now, the 135-year-old Spitbank Fort looks more hospitable, though many of the brutal features of the fort have been preserved since the renovation. Cannon holes turned into bedroom windows overlooking the sea, and charging cellars became niches.
