Discovered a unique purple mineral





In the mountains of Australia has found a previously unknown purple mineral – crystal fragile, no more than half of a millimeter in diameter.

Researchers in Western Australia have found a purple crystal that has a unique structure and composition. According to experts, the stone is not related to any known mineral species. A tiny, half-millimetre, named putnisite crystals. Dr. Peter Elliott, a researcher from the University of Adelaide, said that a mineral that was discovered South of lake Cowan near the town of Norseman in Western Australia.

"Most minerals belong to a family or small group of related minerals, but putnisite is completely unique and unrelated to anything". Crystals of the new mineral found in volcanic rocks, and its structure consists of an unusual combination of elements: strontium, calcium, chromium, sulphur, carbon, oxygen and hydrogen. Named after famous mineralogists of Australia – Andrew and Christine Putnis.
