Good sleep helps women with breast cancer

A new study reports that sleep efficiency is a predictor of life expectancy for women with breast cancer.

The results of experiments of scientists from Stanford show that higher sleep efficiency is associated with lower mortality over the ensuing six years. This effect remains even after adjusting this to take account of age and received treatment. The median survival was 69 months compared to 33 months among participants with low sleep efficiency. Relationships between sleep duration and survival, scientists have found.

Author Oksana Pulis says: "We were surprised by the magnitude of the relationship between sleep quality and overall survival even after we adjusted all the variables. A good night's sleep, apparently, is a strong protective effect with advanced breast cancer".
