Animals behind bars - sad photos of Elias Hassos
German photographer Elias Hassos took a series of pictures of animals from the zoo, which compresses the heart.
No, there are no harrowing cruelties there – just anguish in the eyes of the beasts behind bars, without guilt, deprived of their liberty for life and forced to spend day after day in cramped cages, in the same place. For most zoo visitors, these poor animals are more likely to elicit sympathy than curiosity or tenderness.
Recently, there have been growing doubts about the need for zoos. Of course, animals are still needed by humans for educational and research purposes. Many species are on the verge of extinction and need protection. But the concept of zoos, according to many, must change – and the sooner the better.
