An unusual hotel in a prehistoric cave
The hotel with its own soul and atmosphere was created in caves that are more than 9000 years old. Imagine the situation there! Can you sleep in a place like this?
Restored with respect to local tradition, Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita is located in the Sassi Matera region of southern Italy. 9,000-year-old Italian caves have long been used for human habitation. Housed in a volcanic lime tuffet on the slope of Matera, the Sextantio Le Grotte Della Civita cave was originally a citadel for Italian peasants. In the 1950s, the population was forcibly driven out of the caves, many peasants then returned against the government's wishes. Today, the area has become a UNESCO World Heritage Site and attracts curious travelers to its amazing rooftop streets.
However, the Sextantio Le Grotte Della Civita is not only an ordinary cave, it is also a hotel where you can stay overnight in one of 18 rooms. Reconstructing the caves thanks to the original architectural materials mined in this area, the maximum masking of the use of modern technology was taken into account, and the introduction of new design was minimized.
The furnishing of the rooms is very simple. Simple furniture made of recycled materials was used, preserving the rural historical tradition in colors, structure and aromas. Candles are placed throughout the hotel, which gives a special atmosphere to these caves. Of course, some elements have been added for modern conveniences, such as bathrooms. The philosophy of the architects was not to betray the "soul" of this building, it was to preserve the rural heritage of the caves. Stunning views, original hand-carved wall blocks and dramatic lighting make this hotel an interesting and magical place.
