Milan Design Week 2014 - eco-design at home

Milan Design Week 2014

During this year’s International Design Week in Milan, designers from all over the world showed how many recycled materials can be used to create original things for everyday life. These items are so stunning, so functional, and they can add a touch of natural beauty to anyone’s home.

The exhibition begins with the Animal House installation sponsored by Marni. In the large and bright room are sculptures of various animals made of metal and bright colored PVC, which were made by a group of Colombian women. Sculptures of different animals, such as rabbits, ducks, flamingos, donkeys, ostriches and giraffes, are made by hand and unique – each has its own color, size and shape.

The exhibition also presented household items made of the same materials: sun loungers, chairs, coffee tables and rocking chairs. The installation, which was a wild success in Milan, was created as part of the Marni charity project, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.

The next designer on display is Alvaro Catalan de Ocon, who was born in Madrid, studied in Milan, and graduated from Central Saint Martin in London. His work has been exhibited in many famous galleries such as OA and SimSum in Madrid, David Gill in London, and the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao.

At Milan Design Week, you can see one of the last works of de Okon, which was called Spazio Rossana Orlandi. He designed a series of wicker lampshades that were later brought to life by Chilean workers made of recycled plastic. The lampshades were named after the town where workers mostly live – Chimbarongo. A collection of lampshades is displayed at the gallery entrance to create a warm, friendly atmosphere.

Also at the Milan Design Week exhibition, designer Stephania Vazquez led visitors to bewilderment - a cardboard chair standing outdoors can withstand wet weather and does not get soaked. In fact, recycled cardboard, which has wood hardness and waterproofing about equal in properties to PVC, is treated specifically for outdoor use, which also gives each part a beautiful, smooth surface.
