Indonesia will build the world's largest geothermal power station

In Indonesia, the fourth largest population country, there are from 500 to 600 volcanoes, and 129 of them active. Therefore, the use of underground heat for this country no matter how someone important. Already today, Indonesia accounts for about 40% of the world reserves of usable underground heat energy – about 29 gigawatts. So far only involved a small part of the natural potential — involving only seven of the 250 or so proven places to accommodate such plants.





The cost of a new geothermal station in the town of Sarulla is $ 1.6 billion, power – 330 MW.

Funding will be provided by the Asian development Bank (ADB) and Japanese Bank for international cooperation, with the assistance of Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ Ltd, ING Bank NV, Societe Generale, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corportation, Mizuho Bank Ltd and National Australia Bank. It is expected that a quarter of the power plant will belong to the Japanese Itochu Corporation and Kyushu Electric Power Company, 37.5% of Indonesian Medco Power and 12,5% — one of the world leaders in geothermal energy Ormat Technologies Inc.

It is expected that the first phase of the new project will be completed in 2016.
