Penstemon perennial in your garden

This flower is not popular, I do not know why, but it is almost not found in our flower gardens. In my opinion, flower growers neglect this plant in vain, because it has a lot of advantages!

I will briefly mention that he prefers loose, nutritious soil, does not tolerate stagnation of water at the roots, easily tolerates short periods of drought. It is better to plant it in a sunny place, but you can in a light penumbra. All species are easily propagated by seeds, some by rhizome division, some by cutting.

And now I would like to tell you about my personal impressions of Pentemon. The top photo is Anthony's hybrid pentemon, a mix. The height of the flower is 50-60 cm, flowering is friendly, long. In hot dry weather, it lasts about a month, and if it is cool and humid, then 15-20 days longer! Once the flowers have withered, I prune the flower-bearers, leaving a few for seeds. Due to this, re-flowering (at the end of summer) is more friendly. It is this variety that has one rhizome, from which many shoots depart, so it will not work to multiply by dividing the bush - only by cutting or seeds. Here, I will tell you more about growing from seeds. I plant them in the winter, right in the open. In the spring, the seeds start to grow early, especially fast young pentemons have time to gain strength and bloom together with adult plants already in May! Such are units, and by the second wave of flowering they can be 50 and 100%.

What I do not like about this variety – for 4 years of life, the plant is small, forms fewer shoots and flowers. That is, they need to be updated periodically. But how beautiful is the glade of multicolored penstemon at the peak of flowering, what a delicate aroma they emit. By the way, in the cutting they are great, if you cut the tips of the stems and change the water every day, stand up to 2 weeks.

And this is my favorite - Penstemon bearded Kokkineus. In our climate, it needs penumbra, so it grows in my garden. What I like about it is its continuous bloom. As soon as the flowers withered on one shoot, a new one with buds is ready. A bush is never without flowers. And the color of the petals is unusually bright, coral-scarlet.

These are the Penstemons that have settled with me. I want to add foxglove to this company, there are varieties with beautiful burgundy foliage. And you grow penstemon, which varieties do you like the most?
