The United States agreed to send the remains of 18 dinosaurs to Mongolia after they were discovered in the course of a criminal investigation.
According to preliminary data, the age of the skeletons — between 68-80 million years, they have been found in the Gobi desert and illegally smuggled into the US. Their repatriation comes a month after paleontologist Eric Prokopi was sentenced to three months in prison for involvement in the smuggling.
The Prokopi pleaded guilty in 2012 to three counts of a criminal offence and cooperated with prosecutors in recovering information about fossil, including some previously unknown to the authorities.
"This is a historic moment for the U.S. attorney's Office, and we are proud to participate in the return of these dinosaur skeletons to Mongolia," said a Manhattan Prosecutor preet US Bharara on repatriation ceremony in Manhattan. "An event of this kind really has no precedent," he said.
Mongolia builds a Museum of natural history, where they can be exhibited fossils, said Bharara.
Including Mongolia will be transferred to the two skeletons of Tyrannosaurus, a fossilized egg and a well preserved "nest" of several oviraptor skeletons.
