Belarus to limit alternative energy sources

The relevant departments of Belarus have prepared a draft regulatory act that introduces quotas for the construction of energy sources running on non-traditional fuels.

Thus, the authorities intend to streamline investment projects in the field of renewable energy sources (RES). The reason for the restriction, the head of the strategic development department of Belenergo, Andrei Negodko, called the losses for the Ministry of Energy of the republic, which is forced to purchase electricity produced from renewable energy sources using incentive coefficients.

According to Belenergo, there are currently 70 block stations operating on renewable energy in Belarus. In January-June 2014, they released 47.9 million kWh of electricity into the Belarusian grid, which is 85.5% of the total electricity produced by them, by 86.9 billion (excluding VAT).

The unevenness of energy production can lead to a sharp, often difficult to predict change in power flows in places where renewable energy sources are connected, which can lead to reboots of power lines and equipment, Belenergo explained. Such overloads can lead to emergency situations, experts explained.

According to the forecasts of specialists, it is advisable to increase the capacity of renewable energy sources by 1% every 5 years in Belarus so that their share in the energy system reaches 5% by 2035.

According to national legislation, the state purchases from producers that are not part of the GPO "Belenergo", excess electricity generated using renewable energy sources, using increasing coefficients. For wind and biogas plants and hydropower plants, it is 1.1, for sources working on solar energy - 2.7, Interfax reports.
