Scientists have synthesized a molecule of a new form

Researchers at the University of Manchester announced a research breakthrough: they synthesized a new star-shaped molecule consisting of linked rings, which is the most complex ever created.

Scientists have long tried to make a molecule in the form of "Star of David". Graduate student Alex Stephens managed to create a molecule consisting of two molecular triangles, entwined with each other three times into a hexagram. Each triangle is 114 atoms in length around the perimeter.

Professor David Leigh said: "This is the next step on the way to man-made molecular chain, which will lead to the development of new materials, light, flexible and very strong. Just as chainmail was a breakthrough over heavy suits of armour in the middle ages, is a big step towards the creation of materials using nanotechnology. I hope that this will lead to interesting developments in the future."
