The first Lego bricks without plastic

Although plastic is one of the biggest problems of the environment, who in the childhood did not dream to build castles from Lego. And as soon as one of the largest companies on manufacture of toys has released a new series, tons of "old" material was sent to landfill. It would seem that the Danish company has never thought about the consequences.

But recently we received good news: Lego is working to reduce packaging material and invested in offshore wind farms, and last year she stopped working with oil company Shell.

But in his latest press release, the company announced plans to replace plastic in design with sustainable materials by 2030.

From 1963 all the colorful toys were made of plastic known as Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene. In 2014 this material was produced more than 60 billion LEGO elements. For the production of its products, the company uses more than 6,000 tons of plastic annually. Replacing such a huge amount of material can really bring noticeable changes. Their plants are the source of only 10 percent of the total carbon emissions of the company, all the rest comes from the extraction and processing of raw materials.

The company plans to invest $ 1 billion in the center of the development of environmentally friendly products from LEGO in Denmark, to which will stand only one goal: the search and implementation of new sustainable alternatives. For its implementation it is planned to hire 100 professionals.

It is not yet clear what materials will be used, and as yet there is no formal definition of sustainable material, and there are no technical instructions, but the company has already developed some criteria.

It noted that sustainable new material should have: "significantly smaller environmental impact than model material, on the key environmental and social areas of impact, such as the use of fossil resource, human rights and climate change".

The Center for clean products from Lego will be created during 2015 and 2016, it is expected that it will include support functions, currently located in certain places around the world. In addition, the center will collaborate and develop partnerships with relevant external stakeholders and experts, as stated in the company statement.

"Our mission is to inspire and develop the builders of tomorrow. We believe that our main contribution to this is through the experience of creative play, which we provide for children. The announced investment is evidence of our long-term ambitions, our desire to leave a positive mark on the planet which future generations will inherit," said the owner of the LEGO Group Kjeld kirk Christiansen (Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen). "This, of course, is part of the mission of the LEGO Group and the motto of my grandfather and founder of the LEGO Group, OLE Kirk Christiansen (Ole Kirk Kristiansen): only the best is good enough". published
