The foam will make from seaweed
The algae turns out to be very useful — in recent years they have been used as indicator of pollution, wastewater treatment, light source, food and biofuels. Now, the firm for the production of bioplastics company Algix and clean technologies Effekt produce flexible foam made of this material.
The process begins with the harvesting of algae from wastewater in the United States and Asia, with a mobile floating platform. In such conditions, as excessive nutrient-rich water, often associated with algal blooms that in turn cause the death of aquatic life. Thus, to grow algae does not require any additional fertilizer, and removing them can actually help the local environment.
The collected algae biomass is subsequently dewatered, dried, and polymerized in the pellets, and then in combination with other compounds, to ultimately form a soft, flexible foam. Depending on the composition and intended application, the algae are anywhere from 15 to 60 percent of the finished product, which is said to be similar in quality to traditional petroleum foam.
This material will be sold under the name Bloom foam (translated as Floral foam), and is scheduled to start production early next year in the United States and Asia. It may find application in products such as yoga mats, sporting goods and toys.
