10 tips from 86-year-old Kato Lomb, fluent in 16 languages

Kato Lomb, despite the formation of a chemist, was one of the first simultaneous interpreters in the world and could fluently translated into 8 languages, and in General – knew and worked with 16. And this despite the fact that in her time there were no CDs with the voices of the media, no Skype, no language schools.

What is surprising is that most of the languages, which owned Lomb, she had mastered on their own, working exclusively with textbooks and fiction in the target language. At the heart of its approach – the principle of "full immersion in the language": the development of grammar in parallel with the reading of the original texts and the learning of collocations, the most frequently used in oral speech.

Kato Lomb has formulated ten very simple but effective rules for learning the language and expressed them in his book "How I learn languages".

It will be interesting to read for anyone who is mastering any foreign language:

1. To do the language you need every day. The lack of time dedicate at least 10-15 minutes for reading or repetition of new phrases. Especially effective to do in the morning.

2. If the desire to learn a language is weakened too quickly, create your own algorithm classes. For example, some classes, and then – a little music, a little break for a walk. But do not throw study.

3. The context is everything. Never learn individual words, use the context of the maximum. For example, if you remember the expression "strong wind", one of the words automatically bring to mind the second.

4. It is especially useful to write the already finished individual phrases and try to use them as often as possible in speech.

5. Mentally translate it in your mind everything that catches your eye — advertising, excerpts of songs, dialogues, names of newspaper articles. The brain and it is always useful to train your memory.

6. It is helpful to memorize short texts and dialogues. But it is necessary to learn only what is wholly right or pre-corrected by the teacher.

7. Ready-to-use phrases and idioms record and store in memory in the first person. For example: "I am only pulling your leg" (I'm just teasing you).

8. Any foreign language cannot be studied in isolation. Storm the castle is from all sides: watch movies, read books and Newspapers in the original, communicate with native speakers on the Internet. (For example, Kato Lomb began studying Russian with "Dead souls" by Gogol and an impressive vocabulary).

9. Don't be afraid of mistakes, afraid of uncorrected errors. Never leave unchecked. It is better to check twice.

10. Rest assured that no matter what, you will learn the language! Will certainly come a time when quantity will transform into quality, and the language barrier will be broken.

And finally, when 86-year-old Kato Lomb met her 54-year-old friend, she pronounced a pivotal to his life sentence: "Steve, you're so young! So many years ahead, so many languages still to learn!"published
