Jose Alvarenga: A year in the ocean, without food or water
The inhabitants of the Marshall Islands discovered this emaciated wanderer on one of the most remote atolls: the strange man spoke only Spanish and gave the impression of being completely insane. But the reality was even more extraordinary than uneducated villagers could have imagined.
Jose Salvador Alvarenga spent 14 months at sea and returned to his family. This is how his survival story began and developed.

Beginning the road
37-year-old Salvadoran Jose Alvarenga went to sea for a regular day fishing. The company was made up of a young guy who recently started fishing. This story ended after a year, a year that cost one of its participants and the other family and sanity.
Suddenly, a storm swept away a fishing boat tens of kilometers from the shore. The radio stopped responding and the fishermen had already come to terms with their fate. According to the owner of the boat, he sent a search expedition two days after the incident — not to risk the pilot. And for both fishermen began a long stage of struggle for life, which could not endure and the most experienced survivalist.
The men were unlucky: the storm washed away from the deck all supplies of fresh water and food. For several months, they ate raw fish and caught turtles, and the lack of water was filled with the blood of birds and even their own urine. It is noteworthy that the famous traveler, Fedor Konyukhov, commented on this situation as impossible: according to the traveler, it is simply incredible to survive in the ocean without a desalinator.
The teenager did not survive the death of the wanderer first. Alvarenga himself claims that he lost track of time for a long time and therefore does not know when exactly his partner died. The corpse, according to his own statement, was forced to throw into the sea – not to go crazy.
This theory had to be taken for granted, though doctors say Jose Alvarenga was in too good a condition for a man who had spent so much time in the open ocean. The fisherman did not even get sick with scurvy, which means he could get all the substances necessary to maintain the body. The easiest way to get them was through cannibalism. These allegations the fisherman, of course, completely denies.
Alvarenge's rescue was helped by chance. The ship was dumped on one of the Marshall Islands, where it was quickly discovered by local residents. According to the wanderer, his journey lasted as long as 14 months, which is indirectly confirmed by the distance traveled and the condition of the boat.
An alternative version of Garita Palmer Village, the birthplace of the famous fisherman, is in no hurry to accept its missing resident. Local authorities assure: Jose Alvarenga all his life traded in drug smuggling, and the young guy took on the voyage only as cover. The authorities have already checked both versions several times, but could not find any evidence of Jose’s criminal activity.
