Radioactive reindeer from Norway
30 years ago there was the Chernobyl disaster, when a huge amount of radioactive materials escaped into the atmosphere and spread over a large part of Russia and Europe.
And now, after 30 years, the consequence of the Chernobyl accident appeared in the most unexpected way: in Norway, discovered the radioactive reindeer.
1. In Norway a very popular reindeer, and the Sami — indigenous inhabitants of the country — its production is the most important source of income, with a deer they get the$400.
2. 30 years ago in these areas were radioactive rain and snow, and radioactive elements in large quantity is absorbed by mosses, lichens and fungi.
3. ...who so love to eat deer.
4. Conducted research last year revealed some surprising findings: the level of radioactive contamination in Norwegian reindeer amounted to 2 100 becquerels per kilogram. That's a lot. For comparison, the EU limit for food is 600 becquerels.
5. Given this turn of events, the Norwegian government has allowed higher level of radiation for venison 3,000 becquerels. They had to do it after threats of indigenous reindeer herders to give up their traditional occupations.
Radiation deer from Norway.
6. Given that the half-life of radioactive substances, which fell in Norway, is 30 years, this means that today the radiation level in the diet of deer in 2 times lower than in 1986. But it will be many years before radioactive reindeer in Norway, and will be able to return to normal life.
