A new method of desalination processes desalination and waste CO2

Currently, the areas adjacent to the Persian Gulf, drinking water in greater extent due to desalination, although it is not an easy task.

At the same time, the region growing sectors such as oil and natural gas, which pollute the atmosphere with carbon dioxide. A chemical engineer from the University of Qatar is working to simultaneously address both problems, and, as it turned out, its efficient solution can significantly change the situation.

Chemist of Benachi Farid (Farid Benyahia) and his research team have found a method of processing waste from the desalination process used to convert salt water into pure drinking water.

The team has added new methods the process of chemical conversion, which is marking its 150 years, is widely used to produce sodium carbonate for industrial applications, simplifying it from seven steps to two.

Scientist found that pure carbon dioxide, when mixed with salt solution, which is a byproduct of desalination, in the presence of ammonia, produces a solid sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and ammonium chloride solution. Additional steps decompose the solution to a solution of calcium chloride and gaseous ammonia, allowing the ammonia to be recycled and used in the process again.

The process of Benachi is unusual in that it reduces the need for waste disposal desalination by almost 100 percent, producing sodium bicarbonate, calcium chloride and ammonia for reuse in the first stage. He also uses pure CO2, while other similar processes use the exhaust gas from power plants, which includes about 10 percent of CO2 and other gases.

The use of exhaust gas adds a stage of isolation of pure CO2, which makes the process more expensive. In Qatar there are processing plants for natural gas in the neighborhood of the stations for removal of mineralized waste water, which makes the method a scientist potentially cost-effective, at least in areas with similar infrastructure.

"The aim is to solve two nasty environmental problems a smart decision and generate useful, marketable products to offset partially the cost of storing CO2," said the scientist.

Simplified the process of desalination desalination processes waste and eliminates the need to send a supersaturated solution of salt back into the sea. Finding a way to use excess CO2, Benachi believes that his new method could help to offset the emissions created by growing energy industry.

By itself, this process is more expensive than other methods of desalination, but the capture and use of CO2 from various industrial facilities can help to reduce the price if the companies are in the same place. published
