Russia is developing "batteries of the future" for electric vehicles

Samara scientists at the national research University named after academician S. P. Korolev started to create batteries based on aluminum. It is assumed that such power sources are safer, cheaper and more environmentally friendly than current lithium-ion batteries, and can be widely used in electric vehicles and energy storage systems.

Specialists explain that, theoretically, one atom of aluminium can carry three times more charge than lithium. Accordingly, the current which will produce aluminum battery ceteris paribus, can be up to three times higher.

However, there is a difficulty. The fact that the atoms of aluminium is much larger than lithium atoms, so their diffusion in matter is difficult. In addition, lithium batteries have a very high density energy storage. If the aluminum batteries can meet or exceed the lithium on this indicator is not clear.

The calculation of the properties of advanced materials for new batteries in Samara University with the help of software systems ToposPro and VASP. The first of these packages contains a database of more than 1 million substances, equipped with expert system evaluation of the properties of materials of different composition and structure. In turn, VASP is a platform for quantum-mechanical simulation of the properties of solids. Combining two powerful methods for the study of matter allows scientists to obtain qualitatively new results.

The creation of "batteries of the future" on the basis of aluminium can significantly accelerate the technological development of many spheres of human life. Aluminium is much cheaper than lithium and it is one of the most common on Earth elements. Therefore, the appearance of aluminum batteries will give impetus to the development of "green" energy. published
