In Dresden reduced the amount of waste by 50%, forcing residents to pay for their recycling
Even waste can be managed gramotno
in Dresden, Germany, presented the system «Pay-as-you-throw» (eng. Pay as emissions), or PAYT, in order to improve the management of waste and disposal. The idea is to allow consumers to understand how they create waste and make the cost of waste disposal as transparent as possible for consumers. With the help of PAYT citizens pay only for the volume of waste, from which they want to get rid of. And before payment of removal and disposal of waste has been included in the total amount of taxes and municipal fees. This meant that people pay a fixed amount regardless of how much waste they throw away.
After the introduction of PAYT system in 1994, the amount of waste produced in Dresden, dropped by an impressive 50%, despite the fact that revenues and expenditures are growing steadily. Just consumers become gradually aware of how much waste they produce, how much they weigh the waste, recycling and how much is one kilogram. Now citizens are engaged in processing of waste, such as compost made from them, but do not throw up everything in the trash. This, in turn, has a positive impact on the environment, as the landfill is now adjudged not all. All are very happy with this system, because it is true. Each household pays only for what it emits, and many households could save money, so now do not have to pay a flat fee for municipal waste.
