The complex of cave temples of Ellora is located in the Indian state of Maharashtra, near Ajanta.





In the Indian state of Maharashtra is a complex of cave temples - a magnificent, well-preserved example of dravidicheskogo architecture. Its creation dates back to the VI to IX century. Of the 34 caves of Ellora 12 to the south - Buddhist, 17 in the center - Hindu and five on the north - Jain. Since 1983, they are all listed as World Heritage by UNESCO.

The most significant of the temples at Ellora is the Kailasa (Kaylasanatha). It is located in the yard, carved into solid rock. The granite canopy over the entrance are carved in stone colossal statues of Shiva, Vishnu, and other gods. Behind this shelter - a large statue depicting the goddess Lakshmi, reclining on lotus flowers and surrounded by elephants. The huge size of elephants, lions, vultures in different poses surround the temple. The most interesting reliefs on the walls are Kaylasanatha "Ravana trying to overthrow the Mount Kailash", "Shiva-winner" and "The Abduction of Sita". According to legend, this temple was built by Raj elichpurskim Edu in gratitude for the healing water from a nearby source here.
