Thirteen rock churches of Lalibela

In the heart of Ethiopia, 645 kilometers from the capital city of Addis Ababa, Lalibela is a small town, is a famous place of pilgrimage for Orthodox Christians, thanks to the 13 rock-hewn churches.

Churches were built in the twelfth century on the orders of a local king. After the Muslims captured Jerusalem, King Gebre Meskel Lalibela decided to build a new Jerusalem. He tried to recreate as much as possible the architectural features of the city. Church located extremely close to each other, conventionally connected to the four groups. Disconnects temples 25-meter trench symbolizes the Jordan River. The most striking example of the rock temple is the church of St. George. It lies within the ideal cube. The temple itself is in the shape of a cross, it is the largest monolithic church in the world. Church of St. George entered into the UNESCO World Heritage List.
