Salekhard - the only city in the world, located at the latitude of the Arctic Circle.
The city has a long history. Salekhard (formerly Obdorsk, which translated from the Komi language means a place with Obi) was founded as a Cossack fortress in 1595. At that time it was the northernmost outpost of the Russian state. Subsequently Salekhard experienced many changes, but has always remained the administrative center.

In 1635 the town was renamed in Obdorsk outpost, and in the late 18th century and abolished altogether, with an outpost in the village transformed Obdorsk center Obdorsk parish Berezovsky county Tobolsk Province. At the same time, the Russian Obdorsk began to move to permanent residence, the city became a center of trade, it is an annual winter Obdorskaya fair turnover of more than 100 thousand rubles.
