Fortress of St. Anne

As far as I know, this is the only earthen fortress in Russia, preserved to this day.
On the Don, near the village Starocherkasskaya, it was once the fortress of St. Anne. Today this building say a large earthen ramparts and ditches, or satellite images.

The fortress was founded by decree of Empress Anna Ivanovna in 1730, construction continued for 3-4 years. The plan was to form a fortress of a regular hexagon, enclosed by high earthen rampart with bastions. The perimeter of the fortress was about 320 meters.
The fortifications were the commandant's house, powder magazine and a soldier settlement, as well as the Church of the Intercession of the Virgin and customs, transferred from Cherkassk (nowadays village Starocherkasskaya)
It is known that in the future the fortress was included in the Ukrainian defense line and played the role of a support base in the Russian-Turkish war of 1735-1739 years.
Another important function of the fortress was the control of the "behavior of the Cossacks." The commandant of the fortress was the boss for Ataman of the Don, with whom they had to coordinate their actions.
