Fortress of St. Anne

For a long time I have been told about the castle now came across information about it, I decided to share, like on Yap was not.

As far as I know, this is the only earthen fortress in Russia, preserved to this day.

On the Don, near the village Starocherkasskaya, it was once the fortress of St. Anne. Today this building say a large earthen ramparts and ditches, or satellite images.

The fortress was founded by decree of Empress Anna Ivanovna in 1730, construction continued for 3-4 years. The plan was to form a fortress of a regular hexagon, enclosed by high earthen rampart with bastions. The perimeter of the fortress was about 320 meters.

The fortifications were the commandant's house, powder magazine and a soldier settlement, as well as the Church of the Intercession of the Virgin and customs, transferred from Cherkassk (nowadays village Starocherkasskaya)

It is known that in the future the fortress was included in the Ukrainian defense line and played the role of a support base in the Russian-Turkish war of 1735-1739 years.
Another important function of the fortress was the control of the "behavior of the Cossacks." The commandant of the fortress was the boss for Ataman of the Don, with whom they had to coordinate their actions.

As we know the city of Azov, and was formerly a Turkish fortress, for its assault on the fortress of St. Anne was nominated Russian troops. Azov fell. Later, at the end of the war, the Russian Empire was greatly extended and the role of our fortress began to fall, among other things, it was quite far from the mouth of the Don and the Sea of Azov, which graded its military significance. In addition, the constant spring floods and the garrison of the disease caused by living in a wetland, bring additional difficulties in its activities.

In 1749 Empress Elizabeth signed a decree on the transfer of the customs authority and the transfer of the garrison on the high right bank of the Don River at the mouth of Temernik, there was built a new fortress - St. Dmitri of Rostov, that it has become a city of Rostov-on-Don.
After the abolition of the fortress continued to live here part of the merchants; here for some time been a forest Stock Exchange; near the fortress at Ataman Platov opened the first Cherkasy Fair. In the 30s of the 19th century there were built two small houses leprosarium where leprosy patients were treated with the Cossacks. In the second half of the 19th century, these buildings have been eliminated.
