Diamond mining in Sierra Leone - a dirty business. It is estimated that the total value produced in the country is now diamonds - 320 million euros; but a very small part of the money remains in the miners, as indicated in «Diamond Industry Annual Review», the report published by a coalition of non-governmental organizations. It states that the district of Kono (Kono), where there are about 250,000 miners, is one of the poorest areas of the country. From 10% to 20% of diamonds in jewelry stores in London, Tokyo, Paris and New York extract the inhabitants of these places. However, the diamond area are already severely depleted by numerous developments.
In Sierra Leone, diamonds continue to be used to finance rebel groups - the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) and the Revolutionary United Front (RUF), which counteract the objectives of the international community to restore peace in the country.
