Old Man and the Lake (16 photos)

Kreyter Lake, Lake in Oregon, one of the ten deepest lakes in the world. Deep blue color and water clarity - a consequence of the water feeding the melting snow and rain - for many years attracted the attention of naturalists and travelers.

One of these was Joseph naturalists Diller. Conducting geological research in 1896, he mentioned in his diary about the strange beam sticking vertically, not far from the shore. When he returned a few years later the lake, Diller again noticed a log. It is still stuck vertically and five years moved to 400 meters. Since then, the tree was observed regularly, taking it for a boat, over the pelican. "Ozerny old man" became the "guardian" of the crater. In 1938, Washington sent an expedition to observe the stump. It turned out that it was the trunk of a coniferous tree hemlock, a little more than the length of nine meters and a diameter of about 60 centimeters. He easily withstand the weight of a person, and by the action of waves and wind, "old man" is able to travel around the perimeter of the lake, passing sometimes up to seven miles a day.

Feature of "old man" to appear in an unexpected place - a danger to navigation, so boat owners, for their own safety, are required to communicate the location of the old stump with each other. In 1988 expedition, explore the bottom of the lake with the help of the submarine, was going to raise the trees on the shore, as it is constantly spinning next to the scientist, presenting a risk of collision, but when researchers began pulling "Old Man", and went up a storm tore the whole operation. Stump was decided to leave it alone.

"Ozerny old man", contrary to predictions, for over a hundred years floating on the waves of Lake Kreyter, interested in everything that happens in his dominions.
