How much do you need to plant seeds so that you do not throw out seedlings later?
Surely any self-respecting summer resident is sure that he knows for sure, how to plant seedlings properly. And then it will surely be calculated and grow so much good that in the spring you will have to urgently either put it in good neighborly hands or throw it away.
Today's edition. "Site" share the simplest calculation method to stop stocking up on seedlings at random. Assimilate these rules, and you will know exactly how many seeds will be needed for wild shoots.
Every February we have real family battles because of seedlings. Dad is sure that only he knows how to properly sow, dive and transplant seedlings. No one else is trusted with this honorable mission, Victoria writes.
" I'm only satisfied with buying seeds. And then Dad can reject them. I am only allowed to water the seedlings after his long instructions. He is such an avid gardener.”
“But there’s a big problem: every year it plants so many seeds that it leaves too many seedlings.” There is not enough space at home, so you have to either give out or, worse, throw away. What a shame!
“No persuasion helps. Dad has his excuses every time. What if it doesn't come up? What if spring is cold and moody? Therefore, we need to plant more, even more! And then in the spring we sort it out, a young woman complains.
Similar problems are probably familiar to many. But if you are not engaged in the sale of seedlings, then there is no point in planting it more than necessary. Therefore, you should be able to calculate the number of seedlings. And for this it is enough to do just a few elementary mathematical actions.
Of course, experienced gardeners and by eye quickly calculate how much seedlings they will need. But often, instead of the necessary 80 seedlings, all 100, or even 120, are obtained. And then it remains to puzzle in thinking where all this good to put.

Similar problems are probably familiar to many. But if you are not engaged in the sale of seedlings, then there is no point in planting it more than necessary. Therefore, you should be able to calculate the number of seedlings. And for this it is enough to do just a few elementary mathematical actions.
- First of all, we study the recommendations on the package with seeds. We need to know two numbers: the optimal distance between seedlings and the distance between rows. It is these numbers in centimeters that should be multiplied to get the necessary area for one plant. For example, between plants should be 35 cm, and between rows allowed 30 cm. Multiply 35 * 30 = 1050 cm2.
- Then we calculate the area of our garden. As a rule, beds are rectangular, so even a third-grader can cope with such a task. For example, the length of the bed is 4 meters, and the width is 2 meters. Then the area is 400 * 200 = 80,000 cm2.
- Now it remains to divide the second value by the first to get the necessary number of plants. In our case, 80,000/1,050 ≈ 76. Now we add a few pieces to the stock and we understand that 80-85 seedlings will be enough for us.
Of course, experienced gardeners and by eye quickly calculate how much seedlings they will need. But often, instead of the necessary 80 seedlings, all 100, or even 120, are obtained. And then it remains to puzzle in thinking where all this good to put.
