India breaks record for wind and solar energy growth

India added record wind and solar capacity of 5 megawatts each, from 2016 to 2017. For the year, the country added a record wind capacity of 5,400 MW, well above its 4,000 MW target. India’s total wind capacity is currently 32,177 MW.

According to India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, the 2015-2016 report said the previous record was 3,423 MW. More than 3,000 MW of new capacity was added last month.

Of the nine states that have strong enough wind to generate electricity, Andhra Pradesh added a maximum capacity of 2,190 MW — more than 40% of total capacity.

During the previous fiscal year, the Government of India adopted a number of initiatives to accelerate development in the wind sector, including new guidelines for the development of wind power and steps to encourage the creation of hybrid projects related to wind power plants and solar panels.

According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, the country’s solar power capacity will almost double from 2016 to 2017 – with a record 5,526 MW of added capacity.

According to Indian Minister Piyush Goyal, India currently has more than 10 gigawatts of solar power plants, having tripled capacity in less than 3 years.

Currently, the country's total solar capacity is more than 12 GW, up from 6.8 GW as of March 2016.

India plans to overtake Japan as the world’s third largest solar market.

EnergyTrend forecasts that global demand for solar photovoltaic (PV) is expected to remain stable at 74 GW in 2017, with the Indian market experiencing steady growth.

P.S. And remember, just changing our consumption – together we change the world!
