During holidays, electricity in Germany was free

According to Bloomberg, during holidays, electricity prices in Germany can become negative within a few hours or even entire days. The trend is caused primarily by the increase in wind power output. At noon on 26 December, the total capacity of generated wind energy was 33 GWh 60% of the total electricity needed for the country. On 27 December, the figure is 33.7 per GW. In February, Germany will set a record, reaching capacity of wind energy at 33.8 GW. One gigawatts enough to provide electricity to two million homes.

The record will also contribute to warmer weather — as reported by MDA Information LLC, the temperature rises by 5 degrees Celsius above normal. In addition, during the holidays the factories temporarily stop working, and people go on vacation, which leads to lower electricity demand.

Balancing the grid has become one of the paramount goals of the German energy companies. Negative electricity prices are forcing them to stop the operation of power plants or pay customers for the excess to the grid. In the case of large companies charge for the excess can be a substantial amount.

Bloomberg analysts predicted that 25 December, the price of electricity in Germany amounted to 10,95 euros per MW*h. the situation is Similar in Germany and in may 2016. Thanks to the good weather 87% of the countries energy came from renewable sources. At some point the price of electricity also came back negative. Recently it became known that the Federal German Agency for the management of the power grid prevents the increase of wind power stations in the North of the country, as the grid cannot handle the growing load.

Recall that by 2050 Germany plans to completely switch to renewable energy sources and to cut CO2 emissions by 95%. One of the steps towards this goal would be to ban vehicles with internal combustion engines.

In 2030 all new cars in Germany must have status of vehicles with zero emissions. Also, the country is going to impose a ban on entry in the Central part of the city diesel and petrol cars. published
