The efficiency of solar cells can be increased to 50%

Scientists at Israel Technion Institute of Technology have developed a photoluminescent material that doubles the performance of solar cells. Currently, photovoltaic cells only process a very narrow solar spectrum. All the rest of the energy of the star only heats the panels and does not bring any benefit. Thus, the maximum efficiency of modern solar cells is kept at a level below 30%.

Technion scientists have invented a photoluminescent material that absorbs solar radiation and converts heat and light into “perfect” radiation. It reaches each cell of the panel and provides an efficient conversion. As a result, the efficiency of the device increases to 50%. The researchers used optical cooling, in which the absorbed light is emitted back with more energy, thereby cooling the emitter. The technology they developed works in a similar way to sunlight.

“The solar radiation, on its way to the photovoltaic cell, enters the material we created, which is heated by the unused spectrum,” says Assaf Manor, head of the study. In addition, solar radiation in the optimal spectrum is absorbed and radiated back with a purple shift of the spectrum. This radiation is absorbed by the solar cell. Thus both heat and light are converted into electricity.” The team hopes to produce a fully operational prototype of a new solar cell within 5 years. If successful, this technology will revolutionize the industry.

A solar cell with a record efficiency of 26% was created by American scientists from perovskites arranged stepwise to absorb almost the entire spectrum of visible light. published

P.S. And remember, just changing our consumption – together we change the world!
