Mind-controlled robot exoskeleton
Now still fresh in the memory of the Fukushima accident, so the Japanese company Cyberdyne has created an exoskeleton called Robot suit HAL (Hybrid Assistive Limb hybrid assistive limb) to help the workers in dismantling the damaged power plant. Cyberdyne presented his work on the weekly Japanese exhibition of robots in Tokyo. This robot allows the user to perform superhuman physical loads and thus be protected from radiation. But the most incredible part of the project is that this robot suit can be controlled by brain waves: a network of sensors monitors the electrical signals emanating from the user's brain and uses them to activate the limbs of the robot in unison with the limbs of the worker. This allows a person to move without holding the weight of the robot. Therefore, the suit weighs 130 pounds (about 59 kg) it does not feel to those who wears it.
One of the developers, Professor of engineering, University of Tsukuba, Yoshiyuki Sankai (Yoshiyuki Sankai), revealed that the outer layer HAL blocks harmful radiation, while fans inside of the costume cause the air to circulate to maintain a comfortable coolness. Built-in computer all the time monitors the heart rate and breathing of user to notice fatigue. The inventor of Eiji Koyanagi (Eiji Koyanagi) from the Chiba Institute of Technology said that the costumes will be able to act as close as possible to the active zone of the damaged reactor Fukushima. "We have to think about how to protect nuclear industry workers, otherwise Fukushima would not be dismantled".
The only thing that bothers is the name of the robot and of the developer. After all, HAL is the name of a robot gone mad in the movie 2001: a Space Odyssey, while the firm, which created the exoskeleton is called Cyberdyne, and this is the name of the company that created the lethal Terminator in the same movie.
