Why the first explorers of the poles took a kilo of cocaine?

This is no joke, but a real fact.

Here is some information from the documents of the British Explorer Ernest Shackleton and his team when they went to the Nimrod expedition in 1907-1909. The first of three separate expeditions of Ernest Shackleton. The aim of the expedition was to reach the geographic South pole, but Shackleton was forced to turn before reaching the goal in just 180 km

For the treatment white fever — when the snow merges with the horizon and don't know where to go, used cocaine. They rubbed his eyes.

Also, they had opium, which was mixed with chalk and eaten to treat diarrhea.

In addition, to prevent stomach cramps the members of the expedition eat the hemp together with spicy peppers.

And to deal with the cold used whiskey.

As antibiotics and growth promoters used a mixture of caffeine and cocaine.

One portion was given energy by the hour.

Of our usual medications they have in the list there was only aspirin and morphine. The latter, incidentally, has the strongest narcotic properties.

No one, of course, does not doubt the courage of these pioneers, and the more the medicine was on a completely different level. But for the modern man, this set medical cause confusion, although some would be envious to so many “drugs”
