Created magazine volume 185 terabytes of Sony in partnership with IBM

An audio cassette tape of the new generation developed by Sony Corporation in partnership with IBM.

To meet the growing demand for carriers of large amounts of information, experts of the companies Sony and IBM have developed a tape capable of storing record amount of data, up to 185 terabytes, reports the Russian service Bi-bi-si.

New technology uses many of the familiar magnetic tape. On a small cassette is now possible to place as much information as can accommodate about 1500 Blu-Ray disc, whose maximum amount is currently 128 GB.

Experts managed to achieve a density of 148 gigabits per square inch of tape, which is more than five times more than on cassettes, created in 2010 by Fujifilm and IBM.

Media of a similar kind are in demand among large organizations with the need to store large amounts of information for a long time.

Magnetic tape is cheaper and more energy efficient method of storing information compared to data centers that consume large resources and require significant space to accommodate arrays of hard drives.

The downside of tapes is a longer process of extracting from her information, since such devices are designed on the principle of sequential access when the data is retrieved in the order in which they were recorded originally. However, the drives of a tape are considered to be more reliable in our days continue to be used by professionals.
