Quantum dots can turn Windows into solar panels

Windows, the solar panels can become a reality in the near future. This became possible thanks to researchers from the University of Milan Bicocca and Centre for advanced solar Photophysics in Los Alamos, made a scientific breakthrough. The scientists were able to synthesize a new generation of so-called quantum dots, which were embedded in a transparent polymer to capture the sun's energy. Windows solar panels — very soon!
Quantum dots are nanocrystals of semiconductor materials. Due to the high mechanical properties and low price they have already found application in systems of solar panels, lasers, LEDs and transistors.
Leading researcher at Los Alamos national laboratory Victor Klimov says that in this case, the key accomplishment is the demonstration of large area luminescent solar concentrators (LSC) using a new generation of special-engineered quantum dots. While LSC acts as a sort of light-harvesting lens, concentrating solar radiation, which is collected from a large area, resulting in increased power output. Using LSC sunlight pereslushal to a small solar battery, located on the edge of a transparent panel which improves its efficiency.
Luminescent solar concentrators can be widely applied in solar cells of the future. An employee of the University of Milan Bicocca Sergio Brovelli predicts that the LSC will be able to be integrated into new interesting concepts. For example through photovoltaic Windows, the facade can become a large power generator.
