GM invests $449 million in new generation electric vehicle plant
A lot of money is being invested in the next generation of plug-in hybrid cars. Nissan is ramping up battery and electric vehicle production at its plant in Tennessee, Tesla is ramping up its plant in California and plans to build a giga battery factory, and General Motors is investing nearly half a billion dollars in its Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant and a battery factory in Brownstown to power production of the next-generation plug-in hybrid Chevrolet Volt, the Cadillac ELR plug-in hybrid, the Opel Ampera (a twin Chevrolet Volt, which is sold in the European market), as well as several other future projects (the company does not give details about the hybrid version, which is probably a hundred percent electric version).
Of the $449 million, $384 million will go to equip the Detroit-Hamtramck production site to equip the new body shop, purchase equipment, and additional factory upgrades to build the next generation Chevrolet Volt. The remaining $65 million will go toward funding the Brownstown battery plant to produce next-generation lithium-ion batteries and build future battery systems. This investment brings General Motors’ total funding to the Detroit-Hamtramck facility to more than $1 billion over the past 5 years.
The Detroit-Hamtramck plant has a solar array of 264,000 square feet (about 24,500 square meters).
