Sleeping in lit room increases the risk of obesity

Research by British scientists in an attempt to identify the root causes of breast cancer revealed an unusual Association: the illumination the bedroom can enhance a woman's weight.

Great exposure to light at night increased body mass index and waist size in more чем113 000 women who participated in the study. Professor Anthony Swerdlow, from the Institute of cancer research in London, said: "Metabolism is dependent on the cyclic rhythms in the body that relate to sleeping, waking and light exposure. Associations we saw in our study between light exposure at night and obesity are very intriguing. We can't say at this stage what is causing this relationship, but the results open an interesting direction for research."

Dr Matthew Lam: "These figures add weight to the previous results of animal studies that looked at how light exposure, circadian rhythms and metabolism could all be related. It is too early to suggest that sleeping in the dark will help prevent obesity, a known risk factor for breast cancer, but the Association is certainly interesting."

Earlier, a team of Ohio state University explored how night light affects weight, body fat, and violation of tolerance to glucose in mice. They found that even a small continuous light exposure led to an increase of all three factors.
